    Default countback rules

    gday all
would like some info on how countbacks work & can it vary from club to club?
    example
player 1 has 39 pts with 2 pts on the last & 23 pts on back 9
player 2 has 39 pts with 3 pts on the last & 17 pts on back 9

    thanks

    player 1 wins.

Typically a countback works as follows...

    - Score on back 9 holes (the back 9 of the course [10-18] not the last 9 holes played)
    - If tied then a count back goes on the final 6 holes
    - If still tied, it goes to final 3 holes
    - If still tied it goes to hole by hole starting at 18, 17, 16, 15 and so on

I don't know if they vary from club to club. I believe it is usually done as follows til a result: Back 9, Last 6, Last 3, hole by hole back from #18

Surely they have to follow AGU rules, which would be what has been stated above.

Clubs are permitted to conduct a countback under whatever system they choose. The AGU system is merely a guide.

I know of 2 clubs off the top of my head which have had different systems due to a lack of evenness in shot allocation between the nines, so in stroke competitions the results were lopsided.
    Forum needs more banter.

I would have thought it should be commonly known amongst members (it probably should be on the member notice board). Perhaps a couple of calls to different match committee members would reveal all.

    Congratulations on your win.

FYI. In the annual Fixture and Contact Number Booklet, our club has a section on resolving ties. (Matchplay = continue until winner determined, PH Cup = Playoff, Competitions = As above (Last 9/6/3/1/etc.), and if stroke event, using proportion of stroke handicap.)
